Noticia9Annually, IBM Global Business Services, a division of IBM Corp., publishes a Global Location Trends report for which it develops a ranking of the 20 countries that received most foreign direct investment (FDI) relative to their population size. In the 2010 edition, based on 2009 data, Uruguay ranked 19th.

The ranking shows global corporate location trends by analyzing job creation due to FDI relative to population size. Uruguay's position implies that, in the relevant period, more than 50 jobs were created per 100.000 inhabitants as a result of FDI. Uruguay, Costa Rica and Nicaragua are the only Latin American countries that make it to the ranking.

This news is of great importance, since attracting FDI is a key factor in ensuring job creation and greater economic development. In this sense, the report highlights the fundamental role played by investment promotion agencies as a means of promoting the country and attracting investments. "Indeed, almost all countries in the ranking of destination countries below have well established investment promotion organizations with strategies focused on attracting and retaining investment in specific target industries and business functions."

The report is available here.
